Whet your Appetite for the 2012 Noosa Longweekend Festival

The 2012 Noosa Longweekend Festival Program has just been launched, and aren’t we in for a treat! Now in its eleventh year, this multi-genre arts festival is a 10-day celebration of world class events including food, music, dance, theatre, literature, visual arts, and more taking place in a spectacular location. There is something for everyone in this year’s program, and as Noosa Foodie’s priority is of course food, let’s take a look at this year’s culinary offerings:

Noosa Main Beach

Noosa - a spectacular location for this fabulous festival

Back by popular demand is The Duck Waddle. A progressive lunch, this event is being held at Sunshine Beach this year at three fabulous restaurants: Fratellini’s, The Coconut Grove and Embassy XO. Each of the three restaurants will create a delicious duck dish, each of which will be enjoyed with a glass of wine. All three restaurants are in easy walking distance of each other, so you can literally waddle between them! This is a great event, and if like me you’re a lover of duck, not to be missed.
When: Friday 22 June, 12:30pm

The Crab Crawl is another favourite foodie event. A similar format to the Duck Waddle, this event will take place at three top Noosa restaurants – River Cottage, Blue Angel and Thomas Corner. The starring ingredient in this progressive lunch is Spanner Crab from the award winning Spanner Crab Noosa company, which will be prepared in three different ways and each course served with a glass of wine.  To conclude the meal on a sweet note, hand-made chocolates from Cocoa Chocolat will be served. I loved this event at last year’s festival and can’t recommend it highly enough.
When: Tuesday 19 June, 12pm & 1pm (2 sittings)

Another progressive lunch offering in this year’s program is The Street Beach Promenade, starting at Hastings Street and ending at the beach. The participating restaurants in this event are Gaston Bar Bistro, Sails and Season Restaurant. This is a 3-course lunch, starting with an entree at Gaston, followed by a main course at Sails and concluding with a delectable dessert and a glass of locally made STROM at Season. This sounds like a fun event, and a bonus is that parking is included in the ticket price (parking near Hastings Street can be challenging during the Festival).
When: Thursday 21 June, 12pm & 1pm (2 sittings)

Film with Food is always a popular event at the Noosa Longweekend Festival and this year features the romantic and mystical film Chocolat. Organised in conjunction with the Slow Food Noosa Convivium, a 3-course French Provincial dinner will be served. The meal will have a chocolate them, and the entree will be served before the film, the main course in the interval, and dessert at the end of the film. The meal will be prepared by three talented local chefs: Glen Bowman from Ricky’s, Craig McCabe from Noosa Waterfront Restaurant and Eric Pernoud from Maison de Provence.  A welcome glass of champagne is provided upon arrival and this event will take place at the elegant Noosa Springs Country Club.
When: Monday 18 June, 6pm

The All Day Hinterland Gourmet Safari is a great opportunity to experience the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Travelling by coach from Noosa, this tour journeys to Freestyle Gourmet Escape at Dulong, where you will enjoy morning tea and a sweet wine tasting. You will then travel along the beautiful Blackall Ranges for lunch at the Reserve Restaurant near Maleny where you will enjoy a four course degustation menu with matched wines. On the way back to Noosa, the tour will take you to Cocoa Chocolat chocolate factory at Eumundi where you will indulge in some chocolate tasting. This sounds like a great day out for locals and visitors alike.
When: Wednesday 20 June, 9am

In addition to the specific Food events, there are a number of other events that incorporate food or have food as a theme, such as the Supper Club and Literature with Food events. At the Supper Club events, a meal and a glass of wine is provided at Berardo’s Restaurant & Bar, whilst enjoying such acts as Belladiva vocal quartet and Darren Carr, multi-award winning ventriloquist. The Literature with Food events include a meal (either lunch, BBQ or morning tea) with speakers including John Bell, Di Morrissey and Peter Fitzsimmons.   Another food-related event which I am looking forward to is “Love and Hunger, Thoughts on the Gift of Food” where award-winning author and blogger Charlotte Wood in her new book explores the pleasures of cooking and eating.

Tickets go on sale next Tuesday 8 May at 10am, and trust me when I say that tickets to the food events will sell out fast! Tickets can be purchased online at www.noosalongweekend.com, by phone on 07 5455 4455 or in person at The J Box Office at 60 Noosa Drive, Noosa Junction.

See you there!
